For the Right Reasons

It takes a lot of dedication to get up well before the sun on a Saturday morning. We all have our reasons. This Saturday, I wasn’t running, but helping with a local 5k that my wife was in charge of. Having worked a number of races over the years, I was intently focused on making sure everything went smoothly.

Before the last runner completed the course, I knew things had not completely gone to plan. A number of runners nearly missed the finish line because it was too subtle and the race clock did not work. Yet, I did not hear a single complaint from the 428 runners. It eventually occurred to me that my course was not why people where there. The appropriate placement of our water stops was not their main concern. At the end of the day, the majority of these people came out to support a cause. They completed the course because doing so was making a difference.

It’s nice to know that people do things for the right reasons.

Feel the Warmth

It may be overly optimistic, but I have started moving the cold weather running gear into lesser-used drawers. That first step off of the front porch is getting easier as the temperatures come up to that level where you don’t really notice you have stepped outside. This time of year, for me, is historically when I start browsing the race calendar for whatever comes next. There are quite a few great races in the Southeast before that oppressive summer heat returns. Lace up those shoes, call up your buddies, and hit the road. It is going to be a great Spring!
